Welcome to the webinar ‘Eating Disorders – Treatment Resistant or Resistant Treaters?’
Approximately 1.1 million Australians are living with an eating disorder, with 27% of these individuals aged under 19 – up from 15% in 2012.
Join Dr Lilian Zou (psychiatrist) and Dr Karen Spielman (general practitioner) for a clinically grounded webinar addressing this complex and often challenging area of mental health care. The session will cover the assessment and management of eating disorders, focusing on a team-based approach between psychiatrists and GPs, and practical suggestions to improve treatment pathways.
In this session, Dr Zou and Dr Spielman will discuss:
- Demystifying eating disorders for psychiatrists and GPs, including newly available digital resources
- What not to miss in medical management
- Working in teams: Why? How? Who does what?
- What GPs want from psychiatrists during Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) reviews, and vice versa

Speaker profile – Dr Karen Spielman
Dr Karen Spielman is a General Practitioner in Sydney with a special interest and expertise in Psychological Medicine, Youth Health and Eating Disorders. She is the current Chair of the RACGP Psychological Medicine Specific Interest Group and GP Consultant and Research Associate at InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders at the University of Sydney. Dr Spielman is a Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician and Fellow of the Australian Society for Psychological Medicine, and is involved in education, research and advocacy for GPs in the field of eating disorders.
Speaker profile – Dr Lilian Zou
Dr Lilian Zou is a consultant psychiatrist with extensive experience in the assessment and management of a variety of psychiatric conditions, including eating disorders, anxiety, mood disorders, psychosis, trauma, personality disorders, OCD and ADHD. Dr Zou works in the eating disorders inpatient unit at Ramsay Clinic Northside and sees outpatients at Tikvah Clinic in Woollahra.
Host – Dr Sanil Rege
Dr Sanil Rege is a consultant psychiatrist and academic, with dual qualifications from the UK and Australia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK).
