This session caters to mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and other practitioners dedicated to the treatment of bipolar disorder. The webinar explores the CANMAT Guidelines for the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder, international, evidence-based clinical guidelines designed to assist community-based psychiatrists and mental health professionals in delivering optimal care.

The presentation will review the Bipolar Disorder Guidelines and provide practical advice regarding their implementation including:

  1. Recommendations for first, second and third-line treatment with considerations on levels of evidence, clinical support based on experience and consensus ratings of safety, tolerability and treatment-emergent switch risk.
  2. Hierarchical rankings for first- and second-line treatments for acute mania, acute depression and maintenance treatment in bipolar I disorder.
  3. Recommendations for the clinical management of bipolar II disorder and advice on specific populations
  4. Considerations for psychiatric and medical comorbidities such as substance use, anxiety and metabolic disorders, and issues related to safety and monitoring

Speaker profile – Prof Michael Berk

Professor Michael Berk is currently a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow and is Alfred Deakin Chair of Psychiatry at Deakin University and Barwon Health, where he heads the Institute for Innovation in Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation (IMPACT). He also is an Honorary Professorial Research fellow in the Department of Psychiatry, the Florey Institute for Neuroscience and Mental Health and Orygen Youth Health at Melbourne University, as well as in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. He has published over 1400 papers and is listed by Thompson Reuters ISI as highly cited (2015-2022). He has been awarded over $147M in grant funding. His major interests are in the discovery and implementation of novel therapies.

Dr Sanil Rege is a consultant psychiatrist and academic, with dual qualifications from the UK and Australia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK).
