Structured into three immersive units, comprising 13 modules, the course offers a structured approach to learning. Unit 1 introduces participants to the fundamentals of ASD assessment, delving into crucial topics such as taking a clinical history, understanding ASD-related developmental history, and learning the DSM-V criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder – covering both Domain A and Domain B symptoms.

Unit 2 offers a deep dive into diagnostic tests, communication strategies, and support mechanisms. Participants will gain insights into using tests and tools to diagnose ASD, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). Additionally, they will learn how to make a precise diagnosis of ASD, understand specifiers and severity levels, and explore the prevalence of common co-morbidities in ASD.

In Unit 3, participants engage in a clinical audit module, honing their ability to identify co-morbid signs and symptoms of ASD. Through this module, they will learn to recognize key signs of ASD, make accurate differential diagnoses, and utilize the ‘Plan, Do, Study, Act’ (PDSA) Framework for effective clinical decision-making.

Dr James Shelly is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with extensive experience conducting ASD and other neuro-developmental assessments, as part of his role with a tertiary-level neurodevelopmental assessment team.

He has research experience in the area, has authored chapters in ADHD treatment guidelines, and has participated in the ICF Core Set development project for ASD and ADHD at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
