About The Course
This clinical audit explores ADHD and sleep dysfunction through evidence-based assessment and management. Participants will apply the Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycle to identify gaps, measure performance, and enhance outcomes in managing sleep-related difficulties in ADHD. Designed for mental health professionals, the course supports reflective practice, strengthens clinical confidence, and promotes quality improvement in managing sleep dysfunction in individuals with ADHD.

Course Description
Clinical Audit: ADHD and Sleep Dysfunction
Sleep disturbance is one of the most common yet under-recognised comorbidities in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Sleep dysfunction is highly prevalent among individuals with ADHD, with bidirectional effects on attention, emotion, and behaviour. This clinical audit on ADHD and sleep dysfunction provides a structured framework for clinicians to evaluate, measure, and enhance their approach to identifying and managing sleep-related difficulties in this population.
Through reflective practice and evidence-based learning, participants will gain practical insights into the complexities of ADHD and sleep disorders, strengthening diagnostic precision, improving treatment outcomes, and supporting measurable quality improvement in clinical care. The course takes approximately five hours to complete and is designed as an interactive clinical audit activity that fosters reflective learning and professional growth.
What the Course Covers
The PDSA Quality Improvement Cycle
Participants explore the Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) model, a systematic, evidence-based approach to quality improvement. The module guides clinicians through each stage of the cycle — planning objectives, collecting and analysing data, comparing results, and implementing actionable change, thereby reinforcing the principles of effective planning, measuring performance, implementing change, and sustaining improvements.
Insomnia versus Sleep Dissatisfaction
This module helps clinicians distinguish insomnia from sleep dissatisfaction and identify key behavioural, biological, and psychosocial contributors to sleep dysfunction in ADHD. Participants will reflect on their practice, evaluate challenges, and understand how disrupted sleep patterns can amplify ADHD symptoms and impair daily functioning.
Assessment, Management, and Audit Completion
Clinicians will conduct a practical audit involving five patients, applying evidence-based assessment tools, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, and clinical benchmarks. The module encourages participants to reflect on their findings, measure outcomes, and develop targeted strategies for improvement — translating evidence into sustainable clinical change.
Learning Outcomes
By completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify undiagnosed and untreated sleep-related symptoms associated with ADHD
- Use the Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) model to conduct a clinical audit with five patients
- Apply evidence-based clinical guidelines to the assessment and diagnosis of sleep dysfunction in ADHD
- Describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to treat and manage comorbid sleep dysfunction in ADHD
